In addition to non-fiction writers like H.G. Bissinger, John Feinstein, Laura Hillenbrand and Michael Perry, the work of Hunter S. Thompson was a major influence in the scope and style of Brian Carriveau’s Its Just a Game.
With today being the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, ESPN’s Grantland has re-visited the work of Thompson in his visionary article on the legendary horse race, “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved,” recommended reading for any fan that likes to see how sports transcends culture.
While Thompson’s “gonzo” journalism style isn’t for everyone, his imagery and writing that appeals to the five senses is second to none.
